Soda Ash is also called Sodium Carbonate, Backing Soda is also called Sodium Bicarbonate, their differences are as follows:
1. Shape
Sodium carbonate is white powder or fine particles.
Sodium bicarbonate is a white powder.
2. Different thermal stability
Sodium carbonate does not decompose when heated.
Sodium bicarbonate is easily decomposed into sodium carbonate, water and carbon dioxide when heated.
3. Different water solubility
Both are easily soluble in water, and the solubility of sodium carbonate is greater than that of sodium bicarbonate.
4. The reaction is different from carbon dioxide
Sodium carbonate can combine with carbon dioxide (and water) to form sodium bicarbonate.
The sodium bicarbonate carbon dioxide (with water) does not react.
5. Different reaction with sodium hydroxide
Sodium bicarbonate can react with sodium hydroxide to produce sodium carbonate and water.
Sodium bicarbonate does not react with sodium hydroxide.
6. The reaction is different from calcium chloride
Sodium carbonate and calcium chloride (or barium chloride) solutions are easy to form carbonate precipitation.
Sodium bicarbonate and dilute salt solutions are not easy to form precipitation.
7. Different reaction with phenol
Sodium carbonate can react with phenol to produce sodium phenolate and sodium bicarbonate.
Sodium bicarbonate does not react with phenol.
